How to create your own Telegram bot
A step-by-step guide to creating a Telegram bot with @BotFather, protecting its token, and getting it running with code or a no-code builder.
A Telegram bot is a small program that talks to users through the Telegram app, and every one of them starts the same way: you register it with Telegram's own bot for creating bots, @BotFather, which hands you a unique authorization token. From there you either write code that uses that token to make the bot respond, or connect it to a no-code builder that does the coding for you. This guide walks through both paths, plus the token security and hosting basics that apply either way.
Register a bot with @BotFather
Every Telegram bot begins life inside a chat with @BotFather, the official Telegram bot that creates and manages other bots.
- Open Telegram and search for @BotFather, or open the link t.me/BotFather. Look for the checkmark that marks it as an official bot before you continue.
- Send /start to see the list of available commands, then send /newbot to begin creating a bot.
- When asked, send the bot's display name — this is the name people see in chats, and you can change it later.
- When asked, send a username for the bot. It must be unique across all of Telegram and end in "bot" or "Bot" (for example, MyRecipesBot).
- If the username is free, @BotFather confirms your new bot and sends you an authorization token in the same message.
That token is the only thing you need to make the bot actually do something — and the only thing you must never share.
Understand and protect your bot token
The token @BotFather gives you is effectively the password to your bot: anyone who has it can send messages as your bot, read what it receives, and change its settings through the Bot API. Treat it accordingly.
- Never post it in a public chat, a public code repository, a screenshot, or a support ticket.
- If you paste it into code, keep it in an environment variable or a config file that isn't shared or committed anywhere public — not typed directly into a script you might paste elsewhere later.
- If you ever suspect the token has leaked, message @BotFather, choose your bot, and use the option to generate a new token — the old one stops working immediately.
@BotFather is also where you manage everything else about the bot afterward: its description, profile picture, command list, and settings like inline mode or group privacy, all through simple menu commands such as /setdescription or /setcommands.
Build the bot's logic: code or no-code
A token only lets a bot exist — something still has to tell it how to respond. There are two common routes:
- Write code. Using the token, you can call Telegram's Bot API directly, or use a library in a language like Python, JavaScript or Go that wraps that API. Your program listens for incoming messages and sends replies, handling commands like /start or any text a user sends.
- Use a no-code builder. If you don't want to write code, a bot-builder service lets you design the conversation with menus, buttons and simple logic blocks, then plugs in your @BotFather token to run it for you. This trades some flexibility for a much faster setup, and it's a reasonable starting point for a simple FAQ bot, a reminder bot, or a basic shop.
Whichever route you pick, the token from @BotFather is what connects your logic — code or no-code — to the actual Telegram chat.
Get your bot online: hosting basics
Unlike a regular Telegram account, a bot only works while the program answering it is actually running. That program needs somewhere to run continuously:
- Your own computer. Fine for testing, but the bot goes offline the moment you close the program or turn the computer off.
- A small cloud server. Runs around the clock independent of your own device; you're responsible for keeping the server itself updated and running.
- A no-code builder's own hosting. If you used a builder from the step above, it typically runs and hosts your bot for you, so there's no separate hosting step to set up.
Whichever option you choose, it's worth adding a monitoring bot or service that alerts you if your bot's server goes offline. A bot that quietly stops responding for days without anyone noticing is one of the most common ways small projects lose their users.
