We sent each bot the same paragraph with four planted errors - a misspelt word, a doubled word, a bureaucratic filler phrase and a correct but rare word - and looked at what it caught and what it flagged wrongly. We also checked whether it works in a group and whether it returns a correction or just a verdict.
A speller finds words that do not exist. A style checker finds words that exist and should not be there - the vague qualifiers and bureaucratic constructions that make a paragraph unreadable while every word in it is spelt correctly. Running both takes a minute and catches two unrelated classes of problem; running one and calling it proofreading does not.
Spelling engines are language-specific: a checker built for English will mangle a French or Spanish text, and a French one will not help with an English post. Check which language a bot is actually built for rather than which languages it claims to accept. For a group chat, a bot that corrects messages as they arrive is a different tool again, and belongs only in chats that agreed to it.
No. Spelling and style are separate checks - use a speller for mistakes and a stop-word checker for the wording.
Yes, but it reacts to everyone's messages, so add it only with the chat's agreement and give an admin a quick way to remove it.
Each is built for one. Check what the engine behind it was made for before you trust it with a text in another language.
