We gave each bot the same three inputs: a clean screenshot from a recent series, a heavily cropped meme with text over it, and a piece of fan art. Then we searched two titles - one popular, one obscure - and checked whether the bot could tell us when the next episode airs and whether it would notify us. Bots whose main function is streaming episodes were excluded.
Frame search and reverse image search look alike and are not. A frame search compares your picture against video and answers with the title, the episode and the second it appears at - it works on a screenshot and fails on a drawing. Reverse image search compares against art databases and answers with the artist and the post - it works on illustrations, stickers and covers. Keep both, and send the picture to whichever one matches what you have.
For following ongoing shows, the useful bot is the one that either connects to your list on a tracker or lets you subscribe to a title. Then a new episode is a message instead of a thing to remember. Anything that only searches is a reference tool, not a tracker.
A large share of anime bots exist to hand out episodes. They break often, disappear without warning, and the legal exposure is not yours to take on. Bots that search, track and remind are the stable half of this category.
A frame-search bot. Send a clean screenshot and it answers with the title, the episode and the timestamp; cropped memes and fan art usually fail.
Use a reverse image search bot built on art databases; it returns ranked matches with a similarity score and a link to the original post.
Yes - either a tracker bot connected to your list or a reminder bot you subscribe to per title. Both send a message when the episode is out.
