We asked every bot for a recommendation in two genres, non-fiction and detective, and checked whether the suggestions were relevant and came with a synopsis. Download bots were tested on three classics in English and Russian, with file format and legality checked. We also recorded whether the bot is official, what the free tier includes and whether it supports Russian-language books.
The bots here do different jobs. StorytelBot is a discovery tool from an audiobook service: it helps you pick a title and hands you over to the app. Gutenberg sends actual files, but only public-domain classics. No bot in this list tracks a daily reading habit yet. GoodReader and Good Reads Books Bot are lookup tools for ratings and descriptions inside any chat.
Telegram is full of bots that hand out fresh bestsellers as files; they violate copyright, disappear regularly and often carry malware in the archives. This rating lists bots backed by a publisher, a store or a public-domain library. For a book still under copyright the path is a subscription service such as Storytel, or a store.
Public-domain files from Gutenberg come as EPUB, which Telegram opens in any reader app. Audiobook samples play inline as audio messages; full books require the service's own app. Gutenberg's catalog is mostly in English, and GoodReader and Good Reads Books Bot work in English too; StorytelBot is the one bot here with a multilingual interface.
Only public-domain titles, via Gutenberg; the other bots recommend books and link to a service or store.
Browsing, samples and synopses are free; full listening requires a Storytel subscription.
StorytelBot, which has a multilingual interface; Gutenberg, GoodReader and Good Reads Books Bot work in English, and Gutenberg's catalog is mostly English too.
Not in this list yet: the bots here recommend, send or look up books, but none of them keeps a reading streak.
