How to enable comments on a Telegram channel
Link a discussion group: open the channel profile, tap Edit (the pencil on Android), choose Discussion and pick or create a group. Every new post then gets a comment button, and Unlink Group turns comments off again.
To enable comments on a Telegram channel, link a discussion group to it. Open the channel's profile, tap Edit (the pencil icon on Android), choose Discussion, then pick one of your groups or create a new one. On Telegram Desktop the same item is under ⋮ → Manage Channel, and you finish with Save. From then on every new post gets a Leave a comment button. To switch comments off, open Discussion again and choose Unlink Group.
How do I turn on comments in a Telegram channel?
Telegram has no separate on/off switch for comments. A post's comment section is a thread in a group linked to the channel, which Telegram calls a discussion group: each new post is copied into that group, and replies to the copy appear under the post. Telegram's API documentation describes the mechanism in detail. Before you start, check four things (labels as of September 2026):
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| You own the channel or are an admin with Change Channel Info | Without that right the apps don't show the Discussion item |
| You are an admin of the group you want to use | The list only offers groups you manage; you can also create a new one on the spot |
| The group has Topics turned off | A channel's discussion group can't use Topics |
| You accept open group history | Linking switches Chat history for new members to visible, so newcomers see earlier messages |
iPhone and iPad
- Open the channel and tap its name at the top to open the profile.
- Tap Edit in the top-right corner.
- Tap Discussion. Until a group is linked, the row shows Add.
- Tap one of your groups and confirm with Link Group, or tap Create New Group: a group you create here is linked as soon as you name it.
Android
- Open the channel and tap its name at the top.
- Tap the pencil icon in the top-right corner.
- Tap Discussion.
- Tap one of your groups and confirm with Link Group, or tap Create a New Group and name it; the new group is linked right away.
Telegram Desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux)
- Open the channel and click ⋮ in the top-right corner.
- Choose Manage Channel.
- Click Discussion, which shows Add a group until one is linked.
- Select a group and confirm with Link group, or click Create a new group.
- Click Save. If you close the window without saving, the link isn't applied.
What do subscribers see after you turn comments on?
Under every new post a Leave a comment button appears. Once people reply, it turns into a comment counter with the profile pictures of the latest commenters. Tapping it opens the thread for that post, and View Discussion in the channel's profile opens the whole group.
A few details surprise channel owners:
- Subscribers don't have to join the group. By default anyone reading the channel can comment straight from the post. Replies to their comments reach them through the Replies chat.
- Older posts stay without comments. Only posts published after linking are copied to the group, so earlier posts get no thread.
- Comments are visible in the group too. People who open the group see all posts and all comments in one chat, which is what makes moderation possible.
Can a private channel have comments?
Yes. A private channel links a group the same way, and Telegram warns you about what becomes visible. What you see depends on whether the channel and the group are public (have a username) or private:
| Channel | Group | Telegram's warning when linking |
|---|---|---|
| Private | Private | Anyone from the channel will be able to see messages in the group |
| Public | Private | Anyone from the channel will be able to see messages in the group |
| Private | Public | Any member of the group will be able to see messages in the channel |
| Public | Public | Only a confirmation |
The third row is the one to avoid: every post is copied into the group, so linking a public group to a private channel lets anyone who joins that group read your private posts. For a closed channel, link a private group, and consider the join settings from the next section.
How do I turn comments off or limit who can comment?
Turn off comments on all posts
On iPhone or Android, open the channel profile, tap Edit (the pencil on Android), then Discussion and Unlink Group (Android asks you to confirm with Unlink). On desktop, go to ⋮ → Manage Channel → Discussion, click Unlink group, then Save. The group itself is not deleted: it keeps its messages, but new posts are no longer copied into it.
Close comments under one post
Open the discussion group, find the automatic copy of that post and delete it. Telegram's API documentation confirms that removing the copy disables the comment section of that post. Readers who open the old thread may see "Sorry, this post has been removed from the discussion group."
Let only group members comment
Open the discussion group, not the channel, and go to Edit (on desktop, ⋮ → Manage group), then Group Type. Under Who can send messages? choose Only Members; on desktop, click Save in both windows. Visitors then have to join the group before they can comment. To screen them, also turn on Approve New Members: an admin, or a bot you make an admin, accepts each join request.
How do I moderate comments?
Comments are ordinary messages in the discussion group, so you moderate them with the group's tools, found in its Edit screen (on desktop, ⋮ → Manage group). To delete other people's comments or ban someone, you need admin rights in the group itself, not only in the channel. Long-press a comment on a phone or right-click it on a computer to delete it or act against its author.
| Tool | Where to find it in the group | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Slow Mode | Edit → Permissions | Each member can send one message per interval, from 5 seconds to 1 hour |
| Aggressive Anti-Spam | Edit → Administrators | Telegram's own filter deletes more spam; opened in December 2022 to groups with more than 200 members |
| Recent Actions | Edit screen of the group | A log of deleted messages and bans, where you can report anti-spam mistakes |
| Only Members and Approve New Members | Edit → Group Type | Closes comments to people who haven't joined or haven't been approved |
| A moderation bot | Added to the group as an admin | Keyword filters, warnings and anti-flood rules that Telegram doesn't offer |
For keyword filters, a common choice is Rose (@MissRose_bot): according to its catalog card it is free and handles warnings, mutes, bans, keyword filters and anti-flood. A bot moderates comments only as an admin of the discussion group; how to add a bot to a Telegram group explains how to give it the rights it needs.
Can I add comments without a discussion group?
Yes, if you don't want a separate group. Telegram's Channels FAQ mentions bots as a way to add buttons to posts, and our catalog lists several. We haven't run these bots ourselves: the facts below come from their catalog cards.
| Option | What readers get | Needs a group | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discussion group (built in) | A comment thread under every new post | Yes | Free |
| DiscussBot (@discussbot) | A comment button that a bot adds to your posts | No | Free |
| Comments Bot (@commentsbot) | Comments on the posts you compose in the bot | No | Free |
| LikeBot (@like) | Emoji buttons with counters, no text replies | No | Free |
| Direct Messages (built in) | A private chat with the channel instead of public comments | No | Free or a fee you set |
DiscussBot is the oldest of them: Telegram presented it in May 2019 as a sample bot you make an admin of your channel, and its comment button opened a web page where the reader was already logged in. Its card lists threaded replies and notifications for admins. Comments Bot works the other way round: you write each post inside the bot, attach comments and publish it, which suits channels that want discussion under selected posts only. LikeBot is Telegram's official bot for reaction buttons, handy when you want quick feedback rather than words. LikeBot vs DiscussBot sets the two side by side, and the comments and reactions bots rating ranks the rest.
If you would rather hear from readers privately, Direct Messages for channels, added in June 2025, lets subscribers write to the channel without seeing your personal account. Turn it on in the channel's Edit screen under Direct Messages, and set a price per message if you like.
What if comments don't work?
- There is no Discussion item. You aren't the owner, or your admin rights lack Change Channel Info. Ask the owner to grant it.
- Your group isn't in the list. You need to be an admin of that group. If it has Topics on, turn them off first.
- Old posts have no comment button. Only posts published after you linked the group get a thread. Repost the topic if you need a discussion under it.
- A subscriber can't comment. Check whether Only Members is on and they haven't joined, their join request is waiting for approval, they are banned in the group, or Slow Mode is holding their next message.
- Readers see "Sorry, this post has been removed from the discussion group." Someone deleted the post's copy in the group, which closed its comments.
- Desktop forgot the group you picked. You closed Manage Channel without clicking Save.
Once comments are running, the group needs the same care as any busy chat. Pick a moderator from the moderation and anti-spam bots rating, and for scheduling, statistics and giveaways look through the channel owner toolkit.
