What FoodScan does
FoodScan's own bio spells out its exact workflow: send a photo of your food and note the weight, and it calculates calories and macros from the plate. According to a vc.ru comparison of Russian calorie bots, its real strength shows up with packaged foods specifically — it attempts to read barcodes and printed nutrition labels directly, which sidesteps the guesswork that photo-only recognition runs into with a sealed product.
The interaction is deliberately narrow: a single "send photo" button drives most of the flow, with quick KBZU breakdowns and button-based navigation rather than a chat full of typed commands. That single-purpose design makes it fast for the specific case it's built for.
The flip side, per the same comparison, is that it's less effective with homemade or mixed dishes where there's no label or barcode to anchor the recognition — for those, an estimate based purely on visual analysis will be rougher. If most of what you log is packaged snacks, drinks or supermarket items, this is one of the more purpose-built options in the category; for home-cooked meals, pair it with a bot geared toward that instead.
